Tohoku University Technology: Biomarkers of Pathophysiology in Irritable Bowel Syndrome: T13-074
A biomarker in urine that allows for non-invasive, simple, rapid, and accurate diagnosis.
Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a stress-related gastrointestinal disorder triggered by strong tension, anxiety, and stress, and it is one of the diseases that has garnered attention in modern society, often referred to as a stress society. Symptoms of IBS include abdominal pain, abdominal discomfort, diarrhea or constipation, and bloating in the lower abdomen due to excessive gas. Detailed examinations often reveal no physical abnormalities, and diagnosis is made through neurological interviews, leading to variations in judgment among physicians. This invention measures urine samples from IBS patients and healthy individuals using LC/MS and extracts significant peaks and ratios that meet the criteria of p < 0.05 through statistical analysis. As a result, a group of compounds that show values approximately 1.5 to 2 times higher in IBS patients compared to healthy individuals was identified. These compounds are expected to be utilized as IBS biomarkers.
